About Oedo Onsen Monogatari

Oedo Onsen Monogatari, which means “Great Edo Hot Spring Story,” was a hotspot for those seeking to experience a traditional Edo-era Japanese town environment. Opened on March 1, 2003, the facility was created as part of the celebration of the Edo period’s 400th anniversary. It became a cherished site in Odaiba, Tokyo until it ceased operations on September 5, 2021, due to the expiration of the land lease agreement.

The establishment’s theme was centered around a journey back to the Edo period, with Edo-themed attire provided for guests to fully immerse themselves in the historical ambiance. The onsen’s waters were known for their sodium chloride strong saline spring, believed to offer various health benefits. The facility included communal indoor and outdoor baths that were distinguished by gender, in accordance with traditional Japanese practices.

As a cultural hub, Oedo Onsen Monogatari hosted live performances of traditional dances and music. It offered spaces for playing Edo period games and dining areas where visitors could savor authentic Japanese dishes. Shops within the park allowed guests to purchase traditional crafts and keepsakes.

The onsen was a hit with a diverse audience, garnering attention in pop culture and media, featuring in numerous movies, anime and video games. It also held various themed events, such as a collaboration with anime series which featured it.

Although Oedo Onsen Monogatari is no longer open, its blend of historical charm and modern leisure left an indelible mark on the cultural landscape of Tokyo, and its memory continues to be cherished by those who experienced its offerings.
