The Hosomi Museum in Kyoto houses an extensive collection of traditional Japanese and Asian art, with many pieces designated as Important Cultural Properties. Established by the Hosomi family and officially recognized as the Hosomi Art Foundation in 1994, this museum offers insights into Japan’s artistic evolution and encourages appreciation for Asian art and culture.

About Hosomi Museum

Nestled in the cultural city of Kyoto, the Hosomi Museum exhibits an impressive array of Japanese art, collected by the Hosomi family over three generations. The museum’s collection, which includes over a thousand pieces spanning from the Yayoi to the Edo periods (300 BCE - 1868 CE), provides a thorough perspective on Japanese art history. Among the items are haniwa figures, tea utensils, and significant paintings from periods such as the Heian (794-1185) and Kamakura (1185-1333).

Designed by Masasuke Ooe, the museum’s structure incorporates elements of traditional Kyoto townhouses, featuring a central courtyard, a rooftop garden, and a tea room. The tranquility of the museum complements the viewing of its diverse artworks, such as Buddhist sculptures, lacquerware, and textiles. Noteworthy pieces include the Important Cultural Properties like the “Yoshino Flower Viewing” screen from the Momoyama period (1573-1603) and the “Image of Aizen Myoo” from the late Heian period.

The Hosomi Museum frequently updates its exhibitions, typically four to five times a year, offering visitors fresh themes and experiences. Positioned near Okazaki Park, the museum is in the vicinity of other cultural sites such as the Kyoto City Art Museum and the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto.

As an invaluable resource for art lovers, scholars, and tourists, the Hosomi Museum stands as a living chronicle of Japanese art, from its ancient beginnings to the vibrant culture of the Edo period. Visitors are welcomed to explore the various exhibitions, enjoy the museum’s ambiance, and, if available, participate in tea ceremonies for an immersive cultural experience. In addition to the museum’s offerings, the scenic Okazaki Park and nearby cultural attractions provide a comprehensive cultural visit in Kyoto.
